Google Fi (or maybe just Google) has yet again the way messages are synced between devices. However, this may actually be an improvement as it was done specifically for compatibility with that "other" phone ecosystem.
Unrelated, you can normally sync your iphone messages with your mac... unless your mac is corporately controlled and blocks this behavior. Ask me how I know.
